Cycling tours and gardens visit

We are a couple of Canadians in the 50's who are considering a self-guided cycling tour through English countryside. We are especially interested in visiting gardens (public) and also see some private gardens (over the fence...). Any suggestions for a one-week trip so as to enjoy every moment of it?
Answer:
My first choice would be Kent. It's great for cycling with lots of small quiet lanes, pretty little villages, where looking over the garden fenace is very easy to do. Then, there's one of England's very best gardens - Sissinghurst. And if you feel a bit like real English parkland, then Knowle House and Winston Churchill's home, Chartwell, make great places to see.
