English food fit for a Royal Wedding
We're having a fun royal wedding party and want to serve english food - any suggestions, please?
Answer
Depending on where in the world you are, and at what time you're holding your party, you could serve proper English afternoon tea, or have a shot at this English summer favourite: the picnic.
Both make a great backdrop for a party and you can be as English as you like.
| For a traditional English tea party, you cna serve delicate tea sandwiches followed by traditional cakes. For recipes, check out the teatime treats in the recipes section) or consult this informative guide to English tea parties. And don't forget a large pot or several of English Afternoon or Earl Grey tea. |
If the weather plays ball, then picnic on the lawn is a great way to celebrate. And you can be totally traditional about it, or be as relaxed as you feel.
For a classy picnic, poached salmon, skin removed and replaced with cucumber scales, makes a great centrepiece. It's lovely served with new potatoes in their skins, fresh watercress and home-made mayonaise on the side.
Alongside, serve fresh English asparagus (isn't it great that the wedding takes places just after the official start of the English asparagus season?) with Hollandaise sauce.
Fresh green salad is a must, as are boiled eggs (maybe with remoulade sauce or mustard mayonnaise), and maybe a ham on the bone.
To drink, why not try Pimms with cucumber, lemon rind and orange slices, or offer a light fruit punch. And for pudding: strawberries and cream fit the bill, or traditional Eton Mess, or even a delicate rhubarb fool.
And don't forget to toast the happy couple!
