This must be one of the oldest holiday cottages in Kent that you're able to stay in!

It is as "Kent" as it is possible to get. Five miles from Sandwich and seven miles from Canterbury, this 300-year-old cottage stands in a large garden one the edge of a small village.

Low ceilings and beams proclaim its age, but apart from that Hambleton Lodge has been carefully restored and is cosily furnished to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

History on your Doorstep

Kent is not just England's garden, it's a treasure trove of history, too. From prehistoric times onwards, Kent has often been the entry port to England. So monuments here go way back. Here are some attractions that should be on your must-see list while your renting one of the many holiday cottages in Kent.

Canterbury

Not just England's spiritual home, but a beautiful city in its own right with two Norman castles (I challenge you to find them!), wonderful little alleyways and streets to explore, great shopping, even better food and - of course - Canterbury Cathedral with all its marvels.

Dover Castle

This makes a LOOOONG day out, but is totally worth it. At Dover, you can really see history as a cake of many layers. From a prehistoric fort to WWII underground tunnels, Dover has it all. And now, it also has an amazing exhibition showing how the Great Tower would have looked during the times of one of England's most tempestuous kings: Henry II.

Chatham Dockyards

Ever stepped into a submarine? It's cramped - more cramped than you can possibly imagine. But is it any better on an old sailing ship? How many miles of rope does it need to hoist the sails? How many bullets and cannon balls should you take with you when you sail to America? Where do you sleep and what do you eat? If you're holidaying with children (and even if you don't), you'll be totally blown away by the dockyard.

Days Out and Things to Do

Holiday cottages in Kent make a great base for exploring. As amazing and comfortable as the Lighthouse is, there's plenty to do away from the Lighthouse, too. Herne Bay is great for playing on the beach, windsurfing, sailing and jet skiing. You can explore the ruins of a Roman fort and Saxon church in Reculver Country Park. Or take a trip to Canterbury to explore the cathedral and the two Norman castles and soak up the atmosphere of this lovely town.

If you want a bit of quiet contemplation, the small medieval town of Sandwich or Whitstable with its oyster fisheries make a great day out - or meander through the countryside and just stop for lunch.

This is a wonderful part of Kent to explore by bike (or tandem!) and the cottage owners thoughtfully provide two adult cycles when you rent the cottage.

But the area is also great for walking. There are countless trails and footpaths and even a vineyard trail for you to explore.
