Pancake Day Celebrations 2009
Pancake Day used to be the last indulgent day before the long days of Lent, when fasting and religious observance would set people on the way to Easter.
And while many of us still observe Lent - often by giving up a favourite treat - Pancake Day is enjoyed by many more at a time of year when being outdoors is often a choice made for us by the weather.
So Pancake Day is all about enjoying tasty food and having fun despite the cold and often still gloomy weather.
Apart from the rather famous celebrations in Olney and Westminster, there will be Pan Cake races and Fun Days all over the country this February.
Here are a few of them:
Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire
On February 22nd from 11am-2pm, this National Trust property will hold a Pancake Fun Day. Enjoy a Pancake Recipe Trail, obstacle course, pancake tossing competition and the obligatory pancake race. The restaurant will turn out lots of lovely pancakes, too ... so make sure you have at least a taste!
Errdig House in Wrexham
is on the Pancake trail, too, with a whole week of Pancake Madness. You can learn all about Pancakes & Shrove Tuesday or compete in the Pancake Olympics. There will be puzzles, something for the arty crowd and Dai Chef to teach you the secrets of pancake making.
Events run from 12am-4pm every day from February 14th to February 22md.
