Pictures of England
A Road to Nowhere

Travelling from A to B is something common to everyone. But what if B no longer exists? Then the only travelling you can do is in your memory (or your imagination if you've never been to B).

The B in this picture is Cove Hithe in Suffolk. From there down to Dunwich the coast is being taken by the sea.

A mile or so out, the Romans would have done business, trained their troops and luxuriated in heated bath houses.

To get to the early medieval village, you could probably make it by swimming.

The (probably Tudor-ish) church - once the centre of a busy village - is right behind you. Most of the village is just beyond the beach.

You can't argue with nature. She doesn't listen. But just think of all the history we never get to see!
