But some artists catch their mood better than others ....Monet's paintings of the Houses of Parliament are famous the world over, as are those of William Turner.
The Tower of London with William the Conqueror's great keep at its heart has dominated London's skyline since Norman times. As well as a home to kings, guards and prisoners it was also the site of one of England's earliest menageries and - occasionally - a scene of murder, execution and torture. And even after all these years, the Tower is still more than just a tourist attraction. It's here where Her Majesty keeps the crown jewels and if you're happy to line up for a while, you even get to see them when you visit.
Cross Tower Bridge and you'll arrive in Southwark, once the disreputable part of London. Now you can take the road past the City Hall towards the South Bank and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern Gallery. But London has more than grand buildings, ancient history, theatre and art. The English are a hospitable race, so make sure you stop for refreshment in at least one of the many friendly (and old and grand looking) pubs that the city has to offer.
