What Types of Transport Does England Have?
by Mary Cuffe
(Melbourne, Victoria, Australia)
Most English people would probably answer NONE to that question, but then, England is a rather busy place.
And being so busy, and having such a long history means we have almost all types of transport ever invented.
England has an extensive system of roads, some of which go back to the Romans. Even older trackways are now long-distance walking routes enjoyed by many.
For a long time, roads were all we had to move from one part of the country to the next. But with the industrial revolution came improvements in transport. First canals were built to connect England's great rivers with the coast, then the railways were built and finally, air travel arrived.
And, of course, England being an island, there are ships and ferries to and from the continent.
