Brussels Sprouts Recipes

Brussels Sprouts are like Marmite - you either love the things, or you don't. Personally, I adore sprouts, so I have quite a few Brussels sprouts recipes in my repertoire - and I keep finding more.

Brussels sprouts are a winter vegetable. And as far as I'm concerned, there's little mileage in eating sprouts in the middle of summer. It just doesn't go!

But when it's cold and miserable outside and I crave comfort with a bite, then it's the right time to dig out my Brussels sprouts recipes.

With many people, sprouts have a forgettable reputation, but I think that's just due to people boiling them to death. Keep your sprouts well away from boiling water, and don't overcook them, and you'll be amazed at how good they can taste.

There's no need to serve your sprouts all by themselves. Bacon, chestnuts, mustard, sour cream, chilli and ham all work well with sprouts. Below I've listed some of my favourite Brussels sprouts recipes for you to try. So, why not give them a go?

Plain Sprouts

The easiest way to have Brussels sprouts. All you need is sprouts, oil or lard, a little stock powder and the juice of one lemon.



Brussels Sprouts with Chestnuts

One of the simplest of all Brussel sprouts recipes relies on the simplest of ingredients: sprouts and chestnuts.



Brussels Sprouts in Creamy Mustard Sauce

This is comfort food of a surpremely high order. When the world is against me in the middle of winter, this is where I go. All you need are sprouts, mustard, sour cream or creme fraiche - and a mountain of fluffy mashed potato. A pork chop or your favourite pork sausages won't go amiss, either.



Brussels Sprouts and Bacon

Sprouts and bacon go together like gin and tonic, but make sure you use really decent bacon, not the stuff that leaves lots of gunk in the bottom of the pan.



Bubble and Squeak

The ultimate leftover dinner, or a fine supper with a cold beer. There is some argument if Bubble and Squeak should even contain sprouts. In my book, it absolutely has to. So much so that I would go and cook some sprouts if I don't have any handy but was determined to enjoy some bubble and squeak.
